Do you have a body of work that you would like to self-publish but just don’t know where to start? Have you been working on a book layout but need feedback and guidance to complete the project? In this 5-class series, we will discuss the Photo book market, break down the nuts and bolts of making a photo book which will include editing your images and creating layouts. We’ll talk about technical information like color management as well. There will be a series of critiques/editing collaboration days, which will culminate in a final book that you can take to the portfolio reviews during the Month of Photography in April.

JANUARY 24: Introduction to the photo book market. This has become a booming business in the art world, but most prominently in the photography world. Everyone wants to have a book of their work and with all of the print on demand tools available to consumers, anyone can. Should you have a photo book? Is this the right time in your career? Who is your target market? What form should your book take physically? We will look at many different kinds of photo books, discuss how they function and decipher what book presentation language works best for your personal work.

JANUARY 25:  Editing your work: We will identify all of the ways that photographs communicate differently when placed next to one another in book form. How do you transform single images into sentences? You can create powerful single images. Now amplify your message by placing them together. You will learn about several different editing strategies that will help you create a more complex message visually and conceptually.
The physical form of your book is also critical. What are the ways you can control how the viewer moves through your book, therefore guiding their experience of your work?

At the end of the first weekend you should feel confident that you can easily spend the next month editing your work and putting together a layout to bring to our first critique weekend one month later.

FEBRUARY 21: You will bring loose images for editing and layout. Together we will look at the images on the wall and talk about your proposed arrangement. If you have a handmade book mock-up, bring this too, so we can see your vision for the physical form.

FEBRUARY 22: The specifics of color calibration and profiles for different vendors will be addressed. You will have one month to submit your book to a POD vendor and have a version of your book to show in the class in March and prepare for portfolio reviews in conjunction with the Month of Photography.

MARCH 21: Book review
