This workshop will teach participants how to create a “low-fi” pinhole camera with any digital camera. Using non-destructive techniques, students will play with exposure and compositions to create unique photographic images that address an environmental theme in observation of Earth Day. Inspired by tableau-style lighting setups, this fun, interactive workshop introduces pinhole techniques to create a photographic narrative. Participants will practice visualizing a story with hand-made camera obscuras, and create their own setups to photograph. Over the course of the workshop, we will explore the urban landscape and learn how to work with varying light qualities throughout an entire day. We will discuss how to control digital settings and manipulate images using pinhole aperture, focal length and focal plane to influence exposures and distortion.

Materials Needed:

  • Digital Camera (any digital camera will work. Cell phones, too!)
  • Sync cord or memory card reader
  • Computer workstation to download and share images
  • Tripod
  • If using a DSLR with a removable lens, students should bring an extra body cap to use for their pinhole.
