Capturing the experience and ideas behind creating artwork and putting it into words can be a daunting task. Writing an artist statement can seem overwhelming or unnecessary after all the time and effort you put into creating your artwork.
An artist statement informs audiences about the context, process and inspiration behind a body of work, and it is a critical component in promoting and exhibiting your work. This workshop examines the role of the artist statement and guides students through content, structure, grammar and style to compose a short, but clear and informative, artist statement of their own.
Participants will take part in a number of writing exercises and group discussions that identify key factors when writing an artist statement. We will also review statements written by contemporary artists and discuss how they connect their artwork with their intended audiences. Participants will have the opportunity to draft an artist statement and receive feedback on organization, grammar, flow and relevance.
Materials Needed:
- Notebook or Laptop to take notes and participate in writing exercises
- Encouraged to bring current or previous artist statements for review and discussion (not required)
