Beginner & Intermediate Black & White Film and Darkroom

Objective:

Beginner students will learn the basics of black and white photography, including camera controls with a manual camera to expose film. Processing (developing) exposed rolls of film using the darkroom and tools, and making simple photographic prints.

Intermediate students who have an understanding of the basics will be reacquainted with printing techniques and introduced to advanced methods of exposing film and alternative printing approaches.

Course Description:

Students will learn about small and medium format cameras, and how to use them to properly expose roll film. We’ll cover all phases of the darkroom from how to set up, to how to develop roll film, and how to make enlarged prints from their own film (negatives). The emphasis of this course will be on skill building through an understanding of the process and hands-on work. Students will be encouraged to develop troubleshooting skills and take steps to discover their own individual style.

Depending on each student’s interests and level, specific lessons may be assigned by the instructor to support the student’s individual learning goals. By the end of the course each student will be able to work independently in the darkroom, developing, and printing their own film.

TOPICS COVERED

All students will gain knowledge in:

  • How to use a manual 35mm or medium-format to properly expose black and white film
  • How to properly use basic darkroom equipment to develop roll film and enlarge photographs onto resin-coated photographic paper
  • The basics of darkroom chemistry and how it works
  • Lab safety and proper photographic chemical handling

 

Intermediate Students:

  • Considerations when selecting a film
  • Print manipulation, including burning, dodging, and advanced contrast control
  • Adjusting your personal process to achieve chosen outcomes in you photographs

Materials Needed:

If you have questions about camera equipment or resources, contact us at edu@cpacphoto.org in advance of the class

  • 35mm SLR film camera (SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex) or medium format camera with manual controls – CPAC can provide a loaner 35mm SLR film camera if you do not have your own
  • A minimum of 6 rolls of Kodak TMax 400 film (35mm/24 exposure) or 120mm depending on camera size
  • Dedicated work apron and nitrile exam gloves in your size
  • Additional materials and supplies, not covered by the materials fee for the class, are the responsibility of the student
