Objective:

Learn the fundamentals of black-and-white analog photography through hands-on experience in the darkroom. This course introduces students to exposing film correctly, developing film by hand, and printing black-and-white negatives while helping more experienced students strengthen technique, build confidence, and develop troubleshooting skills.

Course Description:

In this darkroom-based class, beginning students will learn the basics of black-and-white film photography, including how to process film and make introductory darkroom prints. Students will be introduced to the tools, materials, and workflows of the black-and-white darkroom in a supportive, hands-on environment.

For intermediate students, the course emphasizes skill building through process, repetition, and hands-on practice. Students will be encouraged to strengthen their understanding of darkroom technique while developing the ability to troubleshoot common issues in both film processing and printing. Depending on each student’s interests and experience level, specific lessons may be assigned by the instructor to support individual learning goals.

Over six weeks, participants will build a stronger foundation in analog photography while gaining confidence working with black-and-white negatives and prints. This class is ideal for students who want a structured introduction to the darkroom as well as those looking to deepen existing skills through guided practice.

Materials Needed:

• 35mm SLR film camera (SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex) or medium format camera with manual controls – CPAC can provide a loaner 35mm SLR film camera if you do not have your own
• A minimum of 6 rolls of film (35mm/24 exposure) or 120mm depending on camera size
• Dedicated work apron and nitrile exam gloves in your size
• Paper & chemistry is included with your tuition
• Additional materials and supplies, not covered by the fee for the class, are the responsibility of the student

Instructor Bio:
Jacqueline Webster is an artist and arts educator who utilizes photography as a way to understand the pieces of life that intrigue her. By employing photographic processes developed in the 19th century, she creates handmade objects that help translate the world around her. Named one of Colorado’s Top 100 Creatives by Westword in 2017, she has work in private and public collections, including the permanent collection of Oklahoma City Community College. Jacqueline has exhibited widely in curated shows, juried exhibitions, and artist festivals across the western United States, where she has received several awards.
