Continuing Black & White Darkroom

Objective:

This class will emphasize darkroom skills outside of the basics. Students will be encouraged to develop individual styles through alternative darkroom techniques

Course Description:

Students will build on their existing darkroom skills through targeted assignments designed to help them develop their individual style.

Depending on each student’s interests and skill level, beyond-the-basics darkroom techniques will be introduced. Topics could include: print-toning, alternate film stocks and lens filters. By the end of the course, each student will be able to work independently in the darkroom, and to make technique choices to execute their creative aims.

TOPICS COVERED
  • Options and considerations when selecting film and paper
  • Print manipulation including burning, dodging, and advanced contrast control
  • Adjusting your personal process to achieve chosen outcomes in your photographs
  • Introduction to critique

Materials Needed:

  • 35mm or Medium format camera with manual controls
  • Minimum of 6 rolls film of your choice
  • Dedicated work apron and nitrile exam gloves in your size
