This workshop will present three book structures ideal for artists who want to incorporate their photographic imagery into book forms. The book form will be an extension to the imagery you make or vice versa but the emphasis will be on creating books. The class will practice making multiple variations of Accordion/Concertina mock ups and then complete three books – a Back to Back, a Reverse Pop Out and a Dos à Dos. We will also make a hard cover for one or more of the books. Students are encouraged to have sample prints to bind in the workshop. In this course you will learn:

  • About bookbinding materials
  • How to use bookbinding tools
  • About folding techniques, paper choices, adhesives
  • Sewing basic signatures
  • How to make a hard back cover
  • How to create three (3) book structures ideal for prints and photographs

Objective: Learn several basic book making Accordion/Concertina structures that pare well with photographic imagery and make three books out of the work you create. You will take home the three books that you make as well as a set of bookbinding tools to keep.

Materials Needed:

The books you make will be more meaningful if you bring some of your own photographic images, collage imagery, writing, or anything else you might like incorporate but it is not required. Everything else will be provided.
