Create beautiful prints of found objects using one of the oldest photographic processes. Cyanotype is a photographic and light sensitive printing process that produces a permanent cyan-blue image on paper or cloth. We will make personal images by setting objects on photo sensitive paper, using sunlight or UV light to expose and develop. This is a great activity to do together with friends and family. Feel free to bring your own personal objects that have a distinct shape to set on the light sensitive paper or cloth as well as digital negatives.

Objective This workshop connects people to photography and can be done with or without the use of a camera. In this workshop we will learn a bit of history and science through creative exploration and discovery. You will be able take home your uniquely created work.

Materials Needed:

Your images will be more meaningful if you bring some of your own objects. I suggest objects like feathers, hand tools, lace, any object that has a strong shape or silhouette, jewelry, flowers, leaves and other plant matter, ribbon and translucent materials etc.

If you know how to make a digital negative you can bring them sized no larger than 5”x7” and in black and white (higher contrast is best).

If you want to try making an image on clothing such as a shirt, or other material like a hand towel, be sure to bring one that has no synthetic material in it. 100% cotton or linen works best.

I will also have objects you can use and provide paper and cloth scraps to play use.

(You may get blue stains on your clothes so wear old work clothes that you won’t mind staining. You can also bring an apron.)
