As humans, it is our instinct to be storytellers. Documentary Photography is all about depicting humanity by freezing moments in time, whether they are important historical events or representations of everyday life. With a single snapshot, you can reveal something essential about the people and events portrayed. In this two-part workshop, you will discover how to capture vulnerability within dynamic environments and gain insight into the raw emotion of visual storytelling. Increase your understanding of mood, composition, and authenticity without distraction. Learn how to hone your style and create aesthetically pleasing images by combining visual elements, all while capturing the story you’re destined to tell!
The first evening, we will review the history of documentary photography and environmental portraiture including how various styles and perspectives can create the whole mood for a story. After the first class, you will be given a photo assignment to capture images based on what was reviewed in class and send in your best photos to review on the second day. The second evening will consist of reviewing the student’s images, discussing techniques, and continuing the material for the rest of the workshop.
