Objective:

Participants will learn how to use their DSLR or mirrorless camera outside of automatic mode in order to better understand exposure and make more intentional photographic decisions.

Course Description:

This beginner-friendly class is designed for photographers who want to get more comfortable using their camera beyond full auto mode. The first two hours of the class will take place in the classroom, where participants will learn the core building blocks of exposure and how DSLR and mirrorless cameras give photographers more creative control over the final image.

Students will be introduced to the three fundamental components of exposure — aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — and how each one affects the look and feel of a photograph. The class will also cover the priority modes built into most digital cameras, including when and why to use them in different situations. Mark will share practical examples, tips, and real-world applications to help make camera settings feel more approachable and easier to understand.

The final hour of the class will be a guided photo walk, giving participants the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a hands-on setting. During the walk, students will practice using camera settings outside of automatic mode while gaining confidence through observation, experimentation, and instructor guidance.

By the end of the class, participants will leave with a stronger understanding of how exposure works, how to use priority modes with more confidence, and how to make more intentional choices while photographing.
