This workshop is open to all artists working in digital media. Generative AI tools and techniques will be introduced to students to either create or augment art making. Students will have hands-on opportunities to work with different tools as well as take away ideas for art-making with generative AI.
Students may participate either in-person, through a live-stream or view the workshop recording after each class.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) hit the world by storm in the summer of 2022 and is increasingly becoming integrated into the products and techniques photographers have been using for decades. As it rapidly improves, this workshop explores how powerful AI models for image and language generation can be integrated into multiple aspects of creative practice. Using Midjourney as the primary tool, but also delving into other areas where AI has become ubiquitous, such as Adobe Photoshop, the class harnesses AI technology as a catalyst for creativity. Workshop participants will be challenged to consider where and how AI may fit into their practice and artistic vision, and also how this technology may affect the perception of works they create without the use of artificial intelligence. Topics covered include the history of technology and its effect on art making, machine learning frameworks like GAN, generation bias, and legal and ethical issues. The current impact AI is having on photographic technology and industry practice, and the nuts and bolts of how to maximize your Midjourney user experience are core to the class discussion. Students will be asked to create work using knowledge from the first day of this workshop that will be presented and discussed in detail during the second meeting.
