Congratulations to Award Winner Eric Paddock, Curator of Photography at the Denver Art Museum
On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, CPAC presented its 4th annual Hal Gould Vision in Photography Award to Eric Paddock, Curator of Photography at the Denver Art Museum. The award is given to individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions in the Western Region to raising awareness, value, and appreciation of the photographic arts. Its purpose is to perpetuate the principles and ideals that CPAC was founded on, and to honor Hal Gould, one of CPAC’s founders and former owner of Denver’s legendary Camera Obscura Gallery, and others who have made noteworthy contributions to the photographic arts in this region.
“I am touched and proud to receive the Hal Gould Award from CPAC,” said Paddock. “CPAC has been a vital part of the Front Range cultural community for as long as I can remember, and the Award is named for a man who was a champion of fine art photography long before it was universally accepted the way it is today. This is quite an honor.”
The award recognizes Paddock for his many contributions to photography, including serving as the first curator of the Department of Photography at the Denver Art Museum, where he has organized exhibitions by Barbara Bosworth, Robert Benjamin, Garry Winogrand, Laura Letinsky, Kenneth Josephson and Chuck Forsman, among others. Prior to joining the DAM in 2008, Paddock was Curator of Photography and Film at the Colorado Historical Society. During his 26-year tenure, he curated more than two dozen exhibitions and more than doubled the size of the photography collection from 300,000 photographs to more than 800,000 and 32,000 motion picture films relating to Colorado and the West.
Paddock also enjoyed some success as an exhibiting photographer, and is the author of Belonging to the West. His photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Amon Carter Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
He has taught as a visiting professor of art history and photography for the University of Denver, the University of Colorado at Denver, Colorado College and Arapahoe Community College’s study abroad arts program in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Previous winners of the Gould Award include Paul Harbaugh and Kevin Gramer of Byers-Evans House Gallery (2015); R. Skip Kohloff and Lisbeth Neergaard Kohloff, former directors of CPAC (2014); Mark Sink, Curator and Founder of Month of Photography (2013); and Hal Gould, who was presented with an honorary award with Mark Sink in 2013.
