Objective:
Participants will learn the essentials of shooting with film, developing film, and proofing then printing in a traditional black and white darkroom.
Course Description:
This class is an introduction to black & white film photography and traditional darkroom printing. Students will learn basic manual camera operation and light metering. In the darkroom, film developing, proofing negatives through contact printing, and printing individual negatives on photographic paper will also be learned. Additionally, darkroom tools (including equipment and chemistry), as well as methods and techniques will also be discussed. This class is also a great “refresher” course for those looking to return to traditional darkroom use.

- How to successfully use and understand the operation of a manual camera
- Basic film handling and developing for image creation
- How to proof and print in the wet darkroom
- Understanding the exposure triangle and how it applies to all photography
- Basic photo manipulation in the darkroom printing process using dodging and burning
Materials Needed:
- 35mm or medium format camera capable of manual exposure
- 4 to 8 rolls of B&W film
- Hand towel and/or apron
- Note-taking supplies
- Binder for holding negatives and prints
