Objective:
Step into the darkroom and experience the craft of black-and-white printing. Whether you are new to printing or returning after time away, this supportive course introduces the essential techniques needed to create expressive silver gelatin prints from your negatives. This class is limited to 3 students to provide each with an enlarger in our on-site darkroom.
Course Description:
Designed to meet participants where they are, this course provides foundational instruction and space for exploration, supporting both first-time printers and those returning to the darkroom.
Students should bring 35mm or medium format black-and-white negatives. Prior film development experience is helpful but not required.
This class pairs perfectly with How to Develop Black & White Film, offering the next step in your analog photography journey at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.
By the end of the course, participants will leave with several finished prints and the skills to continue printing independently in CPAC’s darkroom.
TOPICS COVERED
- Darkroom tools
- Setting up chemicals (mixing, using and disposing of tray chemistry for printing)
- Setting up the image in the enlarger (choosing an enlarger lens, setting up an easel and focusing a negative)
- Brief overview of variable contrast filters

- Students who have recently developed their first rolls of film

- No prior printing experience is required.
Materials Needed:
- Black-and-white negatives (35mm or medium format)
- A notebook for taking notes
- Apron/Towel (optional but recommended)
