Come see the work of Justin A. Carney, whose project 'Full of Dreams' is currently on display in the CPAC Gallery for our exhibition, Sites of Memory.⁠
⁠
Carney writes about his work, "Full of Dreams began with a realization that I do not know much about where I come from. Most of the people who could have told me stories died before I knew to ask. What remains are fragments: neighborhoods in Baltimore, roads in Virginia, churches, funeral homes, family photographs, and sites where houses once stood. I photograph these places to consider how identity is shaped by inherited histories, absences, and memory. ⁠
⁠
The project questions what traumas, griefs, joys, and fears are carried through generations and how they continue to live within both people and place. While researching my grandmother’s life, I learned that I am related to the Quander family, one of the oldest documented African American families in the United States. Yet the Carney line, my direct lineage, remains largely undocumented. I do not know how my family arrived in Baltimore, what routes were traveled, where ties were broken, or what stories were lost along the way. The work exists within that uncertainty."⁠

Letitia Huckaby has a degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, a BFA from the Art Institute of Boston in photography, and her Master’s degree from the University of North Texas in Denton.⁠

Huckaby writes about this series, A Tale of Two Greenwoods, "This project documents two residential blocks. One block is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Haskell Place in a neighborhood adjoining historic Greenwood. The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre desecrated the Greenwood neighborhood—one of the most prosperous African American communities in the early 20th century. The other residential block is located on St. Charles Street in the town of Greenwood, Mississippi—the namesake of the district in Tulsa and the birthplace of my father."⁠

Come see the work of Harlan Bozeman, whose project 'Out the E' is featured in our current exhibition, Sites of Memory.⁠

Bozeman writes, "The project that would become Out The E began not with photographs but with listening. During the suspended time of the pandemic, when movement was restricted and attention sharpened, I learned of the violence that occurred in 1919, when Black sharecroppers organizing for economic dignity were met with orchestrated terror via White violence. The massacre, followed by the deployment of federal troops, functioned not only as physical suppression but as an attempt to cauterize memory and legacies themselves...⁠
⁠
Out The E is not a definitive record of Elaine. It does not seek to summarize the town or resolve its contradictions. Instead, it gathers fragments of lived experience shaped through time, trust, and proximity. The work considers how people shape a place and how place, in turn, shapes a community. What emerges is not a singular narrative but an ongoing exchange built through presence and engagement. This project remains unfinished by design, carried forward through the relationships that continue to shape it."⁠

#5 "Horizon Lines"⁠

Nothing makes you feel smaller than surrounding yourself with peaks in big country. Some boulders the size of trucks groan and shift, demanding caution as you move through their ranks. One misstep dislodges a few hundred pounds of granite and cracks like thunder, the smell of gunpowder lingering in the air as it finds its new resting place. Solitude is welcomed and embraced, but also respected with a healthy dose of fear. This was shot with my 645 camera so that I could print it big and get a small slice of that feeling at home. ⁠

The North Cascades are often referred to as the American Alps. They are steep, wild, and dotted with glaciers. Some peaks as low as 7,000 feet hold massive bodies of ice that date back thousands of years. This is a shot from the upper slopes of Snowking Mountain. The sun and shadows from cloud cover danced across the accumulation zone, which in past years would carry over multiple seasons and eventually build on the glacier. As less snow accumulates each winter or melts out earlier, this year round snow is becoming seasonal and exposing glacial ice. ⁠
