Objective:

Exploration of the relationship between the photographer and their subject matter, and how it leads to personal expression.

Course Description:

The class will be based on a series of Michael’s articles in the pipeline of On Landscape Magazine. The material divides between a philosophy of art and exploration of personal process in the field and darkroom.

The philosophy is rooted in the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher John Macmurray and the idea that art is rooted in a personal relationship between the artist and other (subject matter) and the idea “knowledge of” of art rather than the “knowledge about” of science. The core idea is to photograph from intuition using resonance as a guide. Resonance is broken into types from secular to spiritual ending in a practice of poetics and expression. Aesthetics are considered as expressive tools with a strong focus on black and white.

Commercial aspects of photography are not considered and personal photography’s goal is personal expression, not revenue generation.

Attendees will be expected to bring past prints and discuss their current practice, absorb the material and then make more photographs and prints to bring for discussion. The goal of discussion is to obtain diversity of experience where we can learn from each other by exploring a personal approach.

No knowledge of philosophy is required. Basic knowledge of making photos and prints is assumed and not taught.
