ABOUT | For December’s PhotoVox, we invite you to join us for a talk with artist Jacque Rupp, who is due to release her third book The Red Purse.
Published by Daylight, The Red Purse is about love, loss, and rebuilding. Shortly after the death of her husband following a long illness, Jacque Rupp bought a red purse, which became deeply personal to the artist as it represented freedom in an otherwise dark and uncertain time as a young widow. The purse sat on Rupp’s dresser for years. She knew she needed to have it, but she did not know why. The Red Purse project is, in the end, not a tale of grief but rather a toast to life, to redefining, to flourishing. The Red Purse, a fictionalized account of Jacque Rupp’s story, is meant to inspire, to prompt conversation, to pay tribute to those we have lost, to those who have struggled, and to those who have evolved.
MEET THE SPEAKER
Jacque Rupp is a documentary and fine-art photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. A visual storyteller, Rupp uses the camera to challenge and question, offering a unique perspective on the world around us. In her most recent work, Rupp focuses on womanhood, using herself and experiences. As the subject matter, Rupp ventures off in the imagined, exploring issues of identity and purpose.
Rupp received an MBA from Santa Clara University and later worked as an executive in Silicon Valley. Building on her lifelong passion for the visual arts, Rupp studied photography at Stanford University, at the Los Angeles Center of Photography and Santa Fe Workshops. She is on the advisory board for the UNAFF (United Nations Affiliated Film Festival), a documentary film festival and serves on the board of the Weston Collective, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding student access to photography.
Her photographs are held in private collections and have been exhibited widely in juried shows and publications. Rupp’s documentary work on farmers in the Salinas Valley has been used by numerous nonprofit organizations both in print and online.
Jacque Rupp was selected as a Critical Mass finalist in both 2022 and 2023.
PhotoVox is a monthly program offered by the Colorado Photographic Arts Center to help you strengthen your artistic voice with the support of other photographers and artists in the Denver Metro community. Meetings are held monthly at either CPAC’s downtown gallery or virtually on Zoom, and feature discussions led by local arts and community leaders. Three sessions per year are dedicated to portfolio sharing.
