ABOUT | As artificial intelligence (AI) influences the photographic industry, and the art world as a whole, understanding its capabilities, limitations, and implications becomes essential for professionals and enthusiasts alike. For October’s PhotoVox, we will delve into the history of tools that have influenced the course of art making, and explore the legal and ethical ramifications of AI in photographic practice. Throughout the discussion, you will see examples of the work some artists are making using this technology and we will talk about the images Todd Dobbs and Patti Hallock are making using artificial intelligence techniques.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Todd Dobbs is originally from Ohio and attended The Ohio State University for my BFA in Photography during the analog era. Moving out to Colorado in the early 2000’s, photography was in the midst of a major technological transformation which he began to embrace in his practice while working toward a MFA in Photography and Media Arts at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since then, he has been working as a college professor teaching commercial and fine art photography, both analog and digital, and he is currently serving as an Associate Professor at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado.

Patti Hallock Patti Hallock received her BFA in photography from the University of Colorado at Denver in 2004 and her MFA in photography 2007 from Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City. Patti has been teaching workshops, giving lectures and worked as a lecturer at the University of Colorado at Denver teaching photography for 13 years. She was invited to exhibit work from her project, “The West Is Here” in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, CO, in January 2013. A book about the work was published in conjunction with the exhibition and included an essay by Karen Brooks from the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum. Her work is in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Patti has been involved working in and teaching technology throughout her career. Currently, she is working as a cybersecurity leader where the integration of AI, machine learning and natural language models is part of her every day work life. Teaching photography and experimenting with integrating AI into her personal photographic work is a rewarding and exciting integration of technology and art.
