Discussion topics will include:

– A brief overview of Waldron’s circular career path in photography and archives, from stock photo agencies at the dawn of the digital era to a regional museum, then Condé Nast, and now with Getty Images

– Different approaches to archival work compared to curatorial work as it pertains to artists/photographers

– A real world example of designing an exhibition, and design considerations, as it traveled to two venues

We are deeply saddened by the loss of James Oliver We are deeply saddened by the loss of James Oliver Milmoe (1927-2022), a renowned photographer, educator, and founding member of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.

“As I reflect on CPAC’s 60th Anniversary this year, our upcoming move to a new space, and the loss of CPAC’s last living founding member, I’m inspired by James’ passion for creating images and sharing the art form with so many others,” said Samantha Johnston, CPAC Executive Director & Curator. “I am deeply grateful for James’ lifelong commitment to photography, and all the work he did to help start an organization that continues to grow and support artists in our community.”

A memorial service for James will be held at 11:30am on Monday, February 27th at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery (12801 W 44th Avenue, Wheat Ridge). Later that day a celebration of life will happen at the Arvada Center from 3:30 – 6:30pm. James’ family will hang some of his photographs and will have copies of his "The Art of Grave Markers" book for sale.

Five years ago, we partnered with @denverarchitect Five years ago, we partnered with @denverarchitecture on a Doors Open Denver Photography Competition, a juried photography contest that resulted in an online exhibition focusing on local architecture.

Over the years we have seen this competition grow from the number of applicants to the variety of spaces captured in the city of Denver. And this year we expanded the call to include images of architecture found across the state of Colorado. Winners can be seen online through February 28th.

Read more about the contest and how juror, Samantha Johnston, curated submissions in the @denverwestword article by Emily Ferguson. Considering everything from light and angles, to the environment surrounding the architecture.

We launched our Veterans Workshop Series back in 2 We launched our Veterans Workshop Series back in 2017. Work from graduates of the 2022 series are currently on display in our gallery and applications for the 7th year of the program are open now until May 16, 2023.

Many thanks to @alinesmithson and @lenscratch for recognizing the value of this program within the greater mission of supporting and celebrating the photographic arts.

Aline writes, "This program is unique to the Rocky Mountain region. While local academic institutions offer advanced photography degrees, they are expensive, impractical for those with day jobs, and can be daunting for veterans with mental or physical disabilities. The Veterans Workshop Series was designed with input from local Veteran-led organizations that remain involved in the program, and CPAC continues to expand its connections to the Veterans community."

"I’ve recently returned to the United States aft "I’ve recently returned to the United States after 10 years of living abroad in Europe with my son and husband. Having spent more than a decade surrounded by ancient castles, cobblestone walks, or quaint cafés, I dreaded the idea of moving back to the drab beige that makes up American suburbia. I loathed the thought of being surrounded by strip malls. Nevertheless, it is space and distance that has given me this sense of intrigue and curiosity about something we barely even notice." - Maggie Cubbler

Maggie Cubbler (@unfiltered_journeys) is one of five Colorado-based artists showing in our new exhibit, A Different Perspective - Personal Projects by Veterans, which is now open as of TODAY! Maggie served in the United States Navy from 2001 - 2007 as an Arabic Linguist.

This unique show is the culmination of CPAC’s Veterans Workshop Series, a five-month program of advanced photography courses provided to U.S. Military Veterans, free of charge.

Opening Reception is tomorrow night from 5 - 8 PM at our gallery.

Starting January 19th, artist and instructor Mari Starting January 19th, artist and instructor Mari Howells (@marihowells) will be teaching an online class based on the ideas in John Szarkowski’s "The Photographer’s Eye" (The Museum of Modern Art, 1964).

Through class lectures, weekly shooting assignments, and hands-on exercises, students will dissect the elements of photographic grammar. The problem of communicating through a photograph is solved through the photographer’s decisions about where to stand, when to press the shutter, what to include and exclude, and what part of the subject best speaks to a larger whole. Students will refine the way they observe, take, and read images. The process can result in images that are more personal and expressive, clearer, and made with a point of view.
