• 61 calendar days or more before the workshop start date: A refund will be issued, minus a $75 administrative fee.
• 31–60 calendar days before the workshop start date: CPAC will retain 50% of the applicable workshop fee. The remaining amount will be refunded.
• 30 calendar days or less before the workshop start date: No refund will be issued.

Objective:

Building a sustainable art practice requires more than making strong photographs. Artists also need to understand how to price their work, manage editions, communicate value, build relationships, follow up after opportunities, and create professional systems that support long-term growth.

Course Description:

In this two-day intensive, photographer R.J. Kern will offer a candid, practical look at the professional side of sustaining a fine art photography practice. Drawing from his experience as a working artist, Kern will discuss print sales, pricing strategies, edition structures, collector relationships, portfolio review follow-up, institutional opportunities, artwork documentation, shipping, and the daily decisions that help artists build momentum over time.

This small-group workshop is designed for photographers who already have a body of work and are ready to think more seriously about how that work moves into the world.

Participants will explore practical questions such as:

• How do I price my photographs?
• Should I edition my work?
• How do I track print sales and editions?
• What information should be included with a print sale?
• How do I follow up after a portfolio review?
• How do I build relationships without feeling transactional?
• What do collectors, curators, and institutions need from artists?
• How do I ship, crate, and document artwork professionally?
• How can I create value for collectors beyond the print itself?

Instructor Bio:

R.J. Kern is an American artist whose work explores ideas of home, ancestry, mythology, and the relationship between people, animals, and landscape. His photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are held in public and private collections. Kern is the author of several photographic projects and books, and his professional practice includes exhibitions, print sales, publishing, institutional relationships, and collector engagement.

In this workshop, Kern brings a working artist’s perspective to the practical realities of sustaining a fine art photography practice.

Participants do not need to have gallery representation or an extensive sales history, but they should come prepared to think critically about their work, goals, pricing, audience, and long-term sustainability.
