Objective:

Participants will strengthen their observational skills and composition by photographing Denver’s built environment—focusing on line, geometry, light, shadow, and scale—through guided prompts and informal feedback.

Description:

Photography begins with looking. Join CPAC instructor Frank Varney for an early-evening photo walk exploring architecture and form in downtown Denver. This low-pressure, community-centered session is designed to get you photographing outside the classroom—without lectures, slides, or homework.

We’ll begin with a short framing conversation and a set of creative prompts, then spend the bulk of the walk photographing together at an easy pace. Along the way, Frank will offer optional, informal feedback and help participants refine how they see structure, space, and changing light as the evening develops.

All cameras are welcome—DSLR, mirrorless, film, or smartphone.

TOPICS COVERED

All students will gain knowledge in:

  • Seeing and composing with lines, geometry, and repetition
  • Working with reflections (glass, water, polished surfaces)
  • Photographing scale, texture, and architectural detail
  • Using light and shadow to simplify and strengthen a frame
  • Noticing transitions in light from late afternoon into evening
  • “Slow looking” strategies to deepen observation and intention

Materials Needed:

  • Any camera (smartphone welcome) + fully charged battery
  • Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate layers
  • Water
  • Optional: small notebook/phone notes for prompts
