This class is designed to provide an opportunity to explore the city of Denver with street or documentary photography. Documentary photography captures unmediated chance encounters and documents urban environments. Documenting candid moments is important in the evolution of photography as it is used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and simple everyday moments. Each class will begin by discussing the works of famous street photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Vivian Maier, and more. The majority of class time will be spent documenting the Denver metro with a digital camera. In addition to basic digital camera techniques; environmental portraits, images focusing on light and shadow, silhouettes, motion, and action are all technical focuses of this class. At the end of the course the class will focus on finding technical and conceptual themes in photographs and organizing them into a photo book or zine. Photographers will leave this class with sense of exploration through photography and a better understanding of how to compose a candid photograph.
