Objective:
High school students will learn the fundamentals of black-and-white film photography and development, including how film works, how to properly expose a roll of film, the materials and chemistry used in the darkroom, and the complete process of developing black-and-white negatives.
By the end of the workshop, students will have hands-on experience exposing and developing their own roll of 35mm black-and-white film.
Description:
Designed specifically for high school students in grades 9–12, this hands-on workshop introduces the process of shooting and developing black-and-white film in CPAC’s darkroom.
Students will begin by learning how to load a 35mm film camera, properly set their ISO, and make well-exposed photographs. The class will then head out on a short photo walk, giving students the opportunity to expose their roll of black-and-white film.
Back in the darkroom, students will learn the complete film-development process—from loading film onto a reel and preparing chemistry to developing, washing, and hanging negatives to dry.
Along the way, students will learn about common black-and-white film stocks, how exposure affects the final negative, and the materials and equipment needed to continue developing film at CPAC.
Each student will expose and develop their own roll of film with guidance from the instructor.
No previous film or darkroom experience is required. This class is open exclusively to current high school students, freshmen through seniors.
