Objective:

To help photographers stretch their creative thinking and explore new ways of visual expression through conceptual, idea-driven exercises.

Course Description:

Online via Zoom, six-week series, 1.5 hours per session

Photography can be a powerful tool for communication and self-expression. This course is designed to help students “think outside the box” and channel their creativity by introducing them to an array of conceptual and artistic methods in photography. The works of historical and contemporary artists will be discussed to encourage students to articulate their own unique ideas through imagery. Students will learn about “reading” images and apply this knowledge to creating photographs reflective of their own voice.

Class Format
– Each week’s topics are designed to expand students’ imaginations and introduce just some of the many artistic possibilities available to the medium of photography. Each assignment will encourage creativity and photographic experimentation.
– Each class will generally consist of:

(1) a critique of the previous week’s assignments

(2) a brief lecture by the instructor

(3) films and/or other materials relevant to the current topic.

– Because this course is conceptual in nature and not a technical class, basic technical knowledge in photography is expected. Camera methods and editing techniques will only be covered only as they relate to each week’s topics.
– Editing of images is allowed, but students are encouraged to use it only to further the concept. In addition, flash photography is discouraged unless students have technical proficiency and the lighting complements the idea being explored.

For online classes and workshops please register as you normally would, and CPAC will update you with the proper links. To participate in an online course, students will need access to a desktop, laptop, or tablet with adequate internet connection and storage space.

• Digital SLR camera with lens or Point & Shoot camera with manual controls
• Camera manual (if lost, can be found online)
• 1–2 compact flash (CF) media cards
• 1–2 Batteries for camera + charger

• Notebook or digital note-taking app (for jotting down, ideas, or workflows)
• Zoom account (free) for access to class
