An artist statement informs audiences about the context, process and inspiration behind a body of work, and it is a critical component in promoting artwork. This workshop examines essential documents in an artist’s career, including artist statements, a short bio, and proposals for exhibitions and grants.
Lessons will guide participants through content, structure, grammar and style to compose a short, but clear and informative, artist statement.
The first session includes timed writing exercises and group discussions that identify key factors when writing an artist statement. The second session will review new statements and talk about how they serve as a base for artist packets.
Materials Needed:
- Notebook or Laptop to take notes and participate in writing exercises
- Encouraged to bring current or previous artist statements for review and discussion (not required)
